Beware; For I am Fearless, and Therefore Powerful

It is unlikely that the created world in “The Street of Crocodiles” was intended. There wasn’t a paintbrush and a cathedral ceiling, but that is exactly what it became. A small vision was recorded on paper, produced into stories and a world was created. It became a living memory, something that still can thrive after the host body has passed away. Forever alive through text, Schulz’s life was torn to pieces. However, where there is destruction there is also new life. Nature’s laws were fulfilled, and a unique world was created from the shreds of the old product. This new creature opened its “dull yellow eye” and came to life. Artful and creative as it may be, cutting up an old book is destroying the essence inside. Foer decided to play with the text and instead ripped it apart.

He leaves holes in the text, holes that serve as the only reminder of what was and bring our attention to what has become. As readers we skip over these holes, we ignore them at first and attempt to read by pages. I believe this act of leaving holes to be the novel’s only strong point. The presence of the holes on the paper act as reminder of the spaces in between the words we see. They bring back the thoughts of the original text and remind the reader where the ideas in this new novel came from. The spaces bring back the original text, if they are omitted, and “Tree of Codes” becomes just another novel, then the ideas behind the words die and so does its relation with “The Street of Crocodiles”. I don’t support cut-out, but I do have to realize the power that it holds in the form.

It is unlikely that the created Silence in “The Street of Crocodiles” was Divine. There wasn’t a Frenzy and Sunlight ceiling, but that is exactly what Colored-light became. A Tangled vision was recorded on Benches, Pressured into Plaster and a world was created. It became  living Rats, something that still can thrive after the Crickets passed away. Forever alive through Flies, Schulz’s Scream was torn to Trash. However, where there is Fury there is also new Grasshoppers. Nature’s laws were fulfilled, and a unique Powdery Cloud was created from the Flesh of the Idiot-Girl. This Half-Wit Peasant opened its “Snout-like yellow eye” and came to life. Artful and creative as it may be, cutting up an old Stump is destroying the Leafy Tin essence. Foer decided to play with the Moth and instead Terribly ripped it apart.

He leaves holes in the text, holes that serve as the only Mumble of Lust. As Pagans we skip over these holes, we ignore them. I believe this act of leaving holes to be Vociferous. The presence of the holes Rattles on the paper as reminder of the Fertility between the words we see. They bring back the thoughts of Adella and remind the Withdrawn reader in the spaces, and “Tree of Codes” becomes Boredom. Then the Woman behind the Soliloquy die. I don’t support cut-out, but I do have to realize the power that it holds in the form.
